What data does PlainBreed provide?
PlainBreed presents adverse event report data from the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM). These are reports submitted by veterinarians, pet owners, and drug manufacturers when an animal experiences a suspected reaction to a drug or veterinary product. The database covers 2010–2025 with over 1 million reports across 506 breeds.
Does a high number of reports for my breed mean it's more at risk?
Not necessarily. Popular breeds like Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds have more reports simply because more animals of those breeds receive veterinary treatment. Higher report counts reflect population size and treatment rates, not inherent breed-level susceptibility. Always look at report rates relative to population, not raw counts.
Are these reports confirmed adverse reactions?
No. These are voluntary reports of suspected reactions, the drug may or may not have caused the event. An animal may have had a pre-existing condition, received multiple treatments, or the event may be coincidental. The FDA includes a disclaimer on every report that causation is not established.
How many breeds does PlainBreed cover?
PlainBreed covers 506 animal breeds across 53 species. Dogs and cats make up the majority of reports, but the database also includes horses, cattle, birds, and other companion animals.
Should I avoid a drug that shows many adverse event reports?
Do not make veterinary decisions based solely on adverse event reports. The FDA uses this data for pharmacovigilance, identifying potential safety signals, but individual treatment decisions must be made with your veterinarian, who can weigh your animal's specific health history, the severity of the condition being treated, and the benefit-risk profile of available treatments.
